April bike milage

Jamie: 160
Jeremy: 265

True to form Jeremy has a hundred more miles than me under his belt.  Maybe in May I'll be able to close the gap!

Only 55 days until we'll be on the Northern Tier bike route across the country!

The Witch of Fox Point

Legend has it there was a witch in Fox Point.  She lived alone and it is said that she killed her family and buried their bodies in her sculptures.  Children from the area would sneak into her yard to try to catch a glimpse of the witch, but dare not be caught as they would never be seen again.

Today I stumbled upon this house while riding my bike.  My goal was to find Doctor's park, but I took a wrong turn and this is where I ended up.  The house belonged to Mary Nohl (1914-2001), local artist and urban legend.

Karl's Country Market

Some friends at work had been talking about this place called Karl's Country Market for a long time, and finally I went a check it out. Once I walked in I couldn't help but ask myself,  "what the heck too you so long?!?!"  It was like a walked into central Europe.  Sausage, bread, pretzels, jam, cookies. I felt bad for the friend who went with me as I "ooed" and "awwed" at all the food I had become a custom to when we lived in the Czech Republic.  I must have stood in the same isle with a dumb grin on my face for a solid 3 minutes.  I couldn't help myself - the next morning we were going to have a Czech breakfast!

Oh, and for the record, Karl's is not in Milwaukee.  Technically it is in Menomonee Falls, but it's close enough. It is defiantly going to rank high on my "best of Milwaukee" list.

Purple Door Ice Cream

Hands-down the BEST ice cream in Milwaukee.

Just in case you don't know, Purple Door Ice Cream it's located in the Walker's Point neighborhood in the Clock Shadow Building.  Pints of their ice cream can also be purchased at the Milwaukee Public Market and a number of grocers around the city.

Plus it's local!
Local food builds community. When you buy direct from a local farmer or producer, you are re-establishing a time-honored connection between the eater and the creator/grower.  For every $1.00 you spend at a local business, more than 68 cents remains in that community. This is comparative to 43 cents if you shopped at a national chain.  Local businesses are owned by people who live in the community, are less likely to leave the community, and are more invested in the community's future.

So go on!  Treat yourself to some Purple Door Ice Cream!

March Bike Mileage

March in Milwaukee was much colder this year.  However, last year it was unseasonable warm, so I guess it was back to a normal, bitter cold March.  But that didn't stop us!
Jamie: 156
Jeremy: 256

It's going to be a little more difficult for me (Jamie) to pack in the miles since am now longer able to bike to work.  I'm determined to find a route that won't get me killed, but until then I'll ride where I can after work and be "weekend warrior" - minus the funny outfits.
